SugarBliss by Chamanka is owned and operated by Chamanka Gamage who says that baking and cooking are very much a part of her DNA. Her great grandfather was one of the founders of the Maliban empire while her maternal grandmother had her own pastry shop at Liberty Plaza. Her family roots aside, she watches TLC and YouTube to get ideas and be inspired and although she puts a lot of effort into what she makes, there are some aspects which can definitely be improved upon. Here is what we thought...
Taste and Value for Money (Cheesecakes and Nutella Tarts) - 3 stars
We tried SugarBliss' Strawberry Cheesecake (Rs. 400 / Rs. 800 / Rs. 2500) and Oreo Cheesecake (Rs. 250 / Rs. 550 / Rs. 1500).
The base of the two cheesecakes were a little hard while the topping was too runny for my liking.
Tastewise, the Oreo Cheesecake was the better option as it was mellow in flavour while the Strawberry Cheesecake was overpowered visually by the dark pink colouring but I can commend that the strawberry puree used gave it a decent twist.
The base of the Nutella Tart (Rs. 320 / Rs. 640 / Rs. 1500) too was just too hard while the topping was too runny for my liking. It was more like a pudding than a tart but flavourwise there were strong elements of Nutella in it, which is always a plus.
Taste and Value for Money (Cookies and Nutella Pancakes) - 3.5 stars
We had SugarBliss' Red Velvet Cookies (Rs. 320 / Rs. 640 / Rs. 1280) and Oreo Chocolate Chip Cookies (Rs. 320 / Rs. 640 / Rs. 1280).
Both cookies were chewy and relatively thin, but the former was slightly overbaked which resulted in the edges being a little bitter. The Oreo Cookie however was soft and chewy while having a decent crunch outside. The chunks of Oreo bits and chocolate chips made for a pretty good cookie.
The Nutella Pancakes (Rs. 300 / Rs. 600 / Rs. 1200) are made with Nutella (of course!) while she also layers each pancake with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. The pancakes however were slightly overdone and dense.
